✓ To Prevent Fungal Growth
When a tree or large shrub is removed, the remaining wood, i.e. the stump, can die off and begin to rot. This can sometimes lead to the wood becoming a host for fungal growth that 'feed' on decaying material, which can then pose a potential problem to other trees and shrubs in the vicinity.
✓ To Facilitate Landscaping
When a tree or large shrub has been removed, it is often the case that a replacement tree or shrub be put in its place, or that landscaping such as new turf or hard landscaping be put in its place.
Having the tree stump completely removed helps facilitate the successful installation of either new planting or of new landscaping.
✓ To Prevent Re-Growth
Certain species of trees and shrubs, such as Willow (Salix), and Ash (Fraxinus) can re-grow from the stump even after the tree has been removed. In addition, many fruiting tree species will also throw new re-growth from the stumps, though this will often be of little benefit as this re-growth will be coming from the original rootstock, and not the fruiting variety that was grafted onto the rootstock.
